Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that affects millions of people around the world and is caused by the accumulation of bacteria along the edges of the gums (gingiva).
This inflammation in the gingival tissue can spread deeper and gradually injure the tooth-supporting structures (cementum, jaw bone). If the tooth support is broken down, a pocket is formed around the tooth (defect). If the process is allowed to continue, the periodontal defect becomes deeper and there is a risk that the tooth may eventually be lost.
